In the midst of Fashion Week, we stopped in on La Jolla-bred, now New York-based designer Jonathan Cohen to get the scoop on his Spring/Summer 2012 line. The collection’s palette is darker than what you would expect of a warm-weather line (“as much as we do a spring collection and a fall collection, we do things that can really work in your closet throughout the whole year,” says Cohen) thanks to textiles inspired by the rusted works of architect Alex Gil.
We hopped on a red-eye and made an appointment at the label’s Flatiron studio for a closer look. Ahead: intel on a hand-painted leather dress and a “no-brainer” spring frock, and details on why women love a good backless dress.
